5. A VOLTA DO SENHOR E A BATALHA DO ARMAGEDOM
— Apocalipse 20:4
7. A ETERNIDADE FUTURA
Maranata! Vem, Senhor Jesus!
The book of Revelation, often misinterpreted, was not written to confuse us with a sequence of strange images, but to give us a clear timeline. Like a blueprint, it reveals God's plan for the future, ensuring that His people live not in fear, but with hope and vigilance.
It all begins with Jesus being taken up to heaven, and the angels promise: “This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way you saw him go.” (Acts 1:11). From that ascension to eternity, there is a prophetic journey that guides us.
1. THE AGE OF THE CHURCH
“Then one of the elders said to me, “Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.” — Revelation 5:5
Today we live in the Age of the Church, a period between Jesus' ascension and His second coming. Revelation 2 and 3, with the letters to the seven churches, portray the characteristics and challenges of this era. In chapter 4, John sees God's throne, and in chapter 5, the Lamb, Jesus, enters to receive the sealed scroll, which represents the title deed to the earth. Jesus, on the cross, bought the earth back; the title is already in His hands, awaiting the moment to actually take possession of it, claiming what is rightfully His.
The first five seals describe continuous realities in this age, such as the advance of the gospel and deception (white horse), wars (red horse), famine (black horse), and death by plagues and diseases (pale horse). The fifth seal reveals the souls of martyrs crying out for justice, showing that persecution has never ceased. A distinctive sign points to the nearness of the end: the rebirth of Israel as a nation in 1948. The fig tree that seemed dry has sprouted again, indicating that we are very close to the Lord's return. There is the rapture, a reserved and sudden gathering for the saved, like a harvest of firstfruits.
2. THE BEGINNING OF SORROWS
“When he opened the sixth seal, I looked, and behold, there was a great earthquake, and the sun became black as sackcloth, the full moon became like blood, and the stars of the sky fell to the earth...” — Revelation 6:12
After the rapture of the Church, a period known as the “beginning of sorrows” begins. The sixth seal describes an earthquake greater than any ever seen, altering the landscape, darkening the sun, and turning the moon red. Although there are debates about the exact timing, this timeline places it after the rapture, as a shock for those left behind, seeing the church disappear. It is a time of great upheaval and awakening, which may lead multitudes to turn to God, but it is not yet the definitive end.
3. DANIEL'S SEVENTIETH WEEK — THE FIRST THREE AND A HALF YEARS OF PEACE
“And he shall make a strong covenant with many for one week, and for half of the week he shall put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall come one who makes desolate...” — Daniel 9:27
Daniel's prophecy reveals a week of seven years, yet unfulfilled, which begins with a covenant made by the Antichrist (the beast) with Israel. This leader will emerge with great authority, performing signs and miracles through a false prophet to deceive the nations. Many believe that this covenant will allow the rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem. In the first three and a half years of this week, there will be an illusory peace in Israel. This temporary “peace,” which the world cannot achieve, sets the stage for the most intense events of the tribulation.
4. THE GREAT TRIBULATION — THE LAST THREE AND A HALF YEARS
“So when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.” — Matthew 24:15
In the middle of the seventieth week, the Antichrist breaks the covenant, establishing the “abomination of desolation” in the Temple, demanding worship and imposing a mark for economic control. This inaugurates the last three and a half years, the Great Tribulation proper. Severe divine judgments are poured out on the earth through the seven trumpets, with natural catastrophes and the release of demons that will torment men. However, God will seal one hundred and forty-four thousand Jews to preach the gospel, and two witnesses will prophesy in Jerusalem. The Church, sealed by the Spirit, will not drink from this cup of wrath, being free from this part of the tribulation.
5. THE RETURN OF THE LORD AND THE BATTLE OF ARMAGEDDON
“Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.” — Matthew 24:30
At the end of the seven years, Jesus Christ will visibly return to Earth, no longer in secret, but in power and glory to reign. He will descend on the Mount of Olives, from where He ascended, to take possession of the earth. The nations, gathered by the Antichrist, will march against Jerusalem in the place called Armageddon, but the Lord will destroy them with the word of His mouth. His coming will be in power and glory, marking the end of evil's earthly rule and the beginning of His visible sovereignty.
6. THE MILLENNIAL KINGDOM
“Then I saw thrones, and seated on them were those to whom the authority to judge was committed. Also I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus... They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.” — Revelation 20:4
After His coming, Christ establishes a millennial kingdom of peace on Earth. The Antichrist and the False Prophet are thrown alive into the lake of fire. Satan is bound in the abyss for a thousand years, prevented from deceiving the nations. In this period, the resurrected saints will reign with Christ. The nations surviving the tribulation will be judged, and the earth will finally have the King it deserves. A thousand years of just and direct rule by Jesus Christ will bring an era of glory and renewal to the Earth.
7. THE FUTURE ETERNITY
“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” — Revelation 21:4
At the end of the millennium, Satan will be released for a short time and, even then, will manage to deceive nations into a final rebellion, demonstrating that the human problem is the heart, not the lack of evidence. But fire will come down from heaven and consume them. The Great White Throne judgment for unbelievers follows. Finally, new heavens and a new earth will emerge, and the New Jerusalem will descend, a place where God will dwell forever with His people, and all pain, death, and sorrow will cease. It is the beginning of a glorious and eternal existence, far beyond our comprehension, where the former things will pass away and everything will be new.
Conclusion
Just as a blueprint guides construction, the timeline of Revelation guides us concerning coming events, not to stir curiosity, but to prepare us. It invites us to live with hope and vigilance, aware that Jesus will come without delay, in the same way He ascended. May our hearts today be watchful and passionate, living as those who know the glorious end of history. Maranatha! Come, Lord Jesus!
¡Maranatha! ¡Ven, Señor Jesús!
